Denmark: importing a Danish car to Hungary

In recent years we have seen an increase in the import of Danish vehicles to Hungary. Partially because second hand car dealers seem to like to Danish car market, secondly because more and more Danes move to Hungary, either for retirement, or for an expat job.

As Denmark is an EU country, the process of importing and registering a Danish car in Hungary is rather straightforward. A recurring issue, however, is the validity of the Danish technical inspection (roadworthiness) certificate which is hard to get recognised by the Hungarian authorities. Not to worry, even if it is not accepted, we can still have Danish car registered in Hungary.

  • Ensure you have Registreringsattest Del I and Del II (original copy!)
  • Even if your Danish car has recently passed Technical Inspection, a roadworthiness check will be necessary before Hungarian registration. To make the local technical inspection less expensive, try to have a valid and original Danish roadworthiness certificate authorised (meaning stamped) by the Danish issuing authority.
